The Bureau of Motor Vehicles is warning of a new scheme that involves the use of stolen personal information to answer online BMV security questions to gain access to accounts. Once inside the account the thieves can request a new driver’s license that will be mailed to their address.

If you receive a postcard from the BMV notifying you of an address change that you did not request, pay attention, this is a sign that your account has been compromised. Contact the BMV immediately if you suspect your account has been hacked, also file a police report. Log into your account and change your password and security questions and place a fraud alert on your credit files with Experian, Equifax, and Transunion.

This type of fraud is extremely concerning because not only do the criminals have a legitimate copy of your driver’s license, but they can also use the license for identity and financial theft and other types of fraud.
