
Most of us spend a significant amount of time in our car so having convenience and emergency items on hand makes travel safer and more enjoyable. In the event of a breakdown or other on the road problems is it best to be prepared.
Spare Tire
Carry a spare tire, several times a year check the tire and add air if needed. You also want a tire iron and jack, pressure gauge, a can of WD40 to loosen bolts and Fix-a-Flat which can stop a leak long enough to get you home or to a garage.
Road Flares/Reflectors
These are useful if you break down at night, placed around your car they will allow other drivers to see and avoid your vehicle if you are changing a tire or working on the engine.
Jumper Cables
Carry a set of jumper cables in case you have battery problems.
First Aid Kit
Purchase an all-in-one first aid kit or make your own. Emergencies happen so be prepared.
Washer Fluid
Carry extra washer fluid, if you run out during bad weather you can become stranded if you lose visibility. Having extra will allow you to fill up and keep moving.
Ice Scraper
Have an ice scraper available to clear the windows of ice and snow.
Bottled Water & Snacks
If you do experience a breakdown, you will appreciate having something to eat and drink while you wait for help to arrive. Restock when needed.
Blankets, Towels & Clothes
If you are stranded in cold or wet weather, you want to be prepared. If you need to change a tire or work on the engine during a storm you want to have dry clothes to change into, if you live in an area that gets cold, keep winter gear such as hats, scarfs, gloves, boots, heavy jackets and other cold weather accessories in your car. Towels can serve multiple purposes and blankets will keep you warm.
Waterproof Tarp
A tarp can serve many purposes, if you need to lie on the ground to make a repair or change a tire a tarp can keep you dry and clean, it can also be used to cover yourself if it is raining or snowing.
Wet Wipes and Rags
Can be used for general cleaning.
Umbrella
To keep you dry or use as a sunshade.
Cell Phone Charger
Cell phones are a lifeline in an emergency, we depend on them for everything. Keep a charger handy so you don’t lose your line of communication.
Tie Down Straps
Can be used If you are in a minor accident and need to tie up the bumper long enough to make it home, hold a door or trunk shut or strap something down.
Seat Belt Cutter and Glass Breaker
These are important items to have if you ever need them. Keep them in the glove compartment where you can easily reach them from the driver’s seat in case of an emergency.
Flashlight
If you break down at night you will need a flashlight to change a tire or work on the engine.
Toolbox
Carry a small toolbox containing common everyday tools including some specifically for vehicle repair.
Owner’s Manual
Keep the owner’s manual in the glove compartment. Anything you need to know about your vehicle can be found in the manual.
Paper Maps
While most of us use GPS for directions, you may not be able to access it if you are in a remote area or lose your connection. Paper maps will provide directions when needed.
